Effective field theory approach to non-equilibrium dynamics is an old concept. I explain how a relation between strongly coupled gauge theories and gravity arises in String Theory and allows to construct this non-equilibrium effective field theory from first principles. I discuss the computation of the shear and bulk viscosities in a large class of strongly interacting plasmas and comment on the ongoing experimental efforts to measure this quantity at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Abstract: We discuss thermodynamic aspects of ABJM theory at finite temperature using the gravity description. We compute various static length scales of ABJM plasma in a strongly coupled regime. For this, we consider the CP3 compactification of the type IIA supergravity down to four dimensions, and identify all the low-lying bosonic modes up to masses corresponding to the operator dimension 3 together with all the remaining CP3 invariant modes. We find the true mass gap, the Debye screening mass and the corresponding dual operators to be probed in the field theory side. We compare these results with those of N=4 SYM plasma.

Semiclassical quantization of rotating superstrings in AdS5xS5 background has played in recent years a key role both in checking the AdS/CFT duality and in building the tools necessary to describe the integrable structures that underly it. I describe the exact quantization of a nontrivial spinning string configuration at leading semiclassical (1-loop) order and extract information on the strong coupling structure of operator dimensions in the dual gauge theory.
