Description
Physics and radiative properties of neutron-star surface layers are reviewed. The discussion is focused on modelling neutron star atmospheres with strong magnetic fields, which profoundly affect atomic properties, plasma ionization, absorption/emission coefficients, and propagation of electromagnetic waves. An overview of available atmosphere models is supplemented by a discussion of unsolved problems, which are important for neutron-star atmosphere modelling.
