Description
Winter School on dynamos (11-22 January 2010)
1. Brief introduction to galactic astrophysics, with emphasis on interstellar gas, as required for the exposition of the properties, role and origin of magnetic fields at galactic scales. 2. Methods for the observational studies of interstellar and intergalactic magnetic fields will be reviewed, together with their results. It will be argued that dynamo action is required to maintain galactic magnetic fields, and simple dynamo models will be developed. 3. Analytical perturbation solution for the mean-field disc dynamos, comparison with numerical solutions. 4. Brief review of small-scale turbulent dynamos in application to galaxy clusters.
