Description
PDC, the High Performance Computing center at KTH, has recently acquired a 93 TeraFlops Cray XT6m system that will be upgraded to a 305 TeraFlops Cray XE6 system towards the end of the year as part of national development plan coordinated by the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC). This system, co-financed by SNIC/VR and KTH, will not only provide unprecedented capabilities to researchers at KTH and Sweden but also firmly position Sweden on the emerging European computing landscape being developed by the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE). In this talk we provide an overview of the Swedish Computing landscape, how the recent establishment of major eScience projects will boost the usage of computational methods in different fields of science, and how these efforts link to the European landscape. We will also discuss aspects of "Green Computing" to keep the overall energy consumption of computing under control.
