Description
We have built up an Electron Beam Ion Trap (S-EBIT) at AlbaNova Stockholm that is now been upgraded to a super-EBIT version for making Highly Charged Ions (HCI) up to bare uranium ions at rest. We went in two steps, first a 30 keV version of S-EBIT was completed being the first EBIT that was ever built with a liquid He free superconducting magnet. This S-EBIT started to operate at AlbaNova in Stockholm in 2006 giving HCI's such as Si14+ , Ar18+ , Xe46+ for in-trap experiments and extracted ions for nano-structure investigations and to be injected into a new Penning system (SMILETRAP II) for precision mass measurements. In 2007 we received an additional grant for an upgrade of the electron energy to the 260 keV (Super-EBIT–version) which is now under completion. This will produce fully stripped heaviest ions for all elements up to Uranium. By this, the facility will be worldwide unique in reaching the highest charge states in a nearly table-top device and opens new eras of scientific research with HCI in various fields of physics, and the possibility of discovering new applications.
