Description
This thesis includes electron-ion interaction studies using the Stockholm Refrigerated Electron Beam Ion Trap (R-EBIT), focusing on dielectronic recombination (DR) of highly charged ions. A novel extraction method and separation of ions by time of flight (TOF) provides complete charge states spectra for each extraction. The charge balance in the trap is modelled with a set of coupled differential equations. The ion quantities derived from TOF spectra are used as input parameters in the rate equations. As a result DR rate coefficients for highly charged sulfur ions (H-like and He-like) are obtained from the same measurement. This data, very relevant for plasma and astrophysics, is reported here for the first time in the attached publications. The experimentally derived plasma rate coefficients are compared and found in agreement with the calculated results available in literature.
