Feasibility and ethics of whole brain emulation

by Anders Sandberg (Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford)

Description
Whole brain emulation (WBE) is the possible future one-to-one modeling of the function of an entire brain. While a staple of science fiction and philosophical thought experiments, trends in current large scale neuroscience are pointing in this direction. This talk will look at the philosophical, scientific and technical preconditions for WBE being feasible and whether some can be determined beforehand. It will also look at the interesting ethical questions about how to handle possibly sentient software: under what conditions should computational neuroscientists treat their simulations as lab animals?
