Second international OKC-DIAS workshop: science with H.E.S.S. II

as a continuation of the "DIAS-OKC" workshop series, which was started in late 2011 in Dublin (http://homepages.dias.ie/~multi-gev/) as a joint initiative of the the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics, University Stockholm, the second workshop will focus on science below 100 GeV in the Southern hemisphere.

The workshop will take place at Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics, AlbaNova University Centre, Stockholm University, Sweden, 23-25 October 2013

Workshop begin: 23 Oct 13, 12:00; Workshop end: 25 Oct 13, 14:00; Social Dinner: 24 Oct 13

The aim of the workshop is a comprehensive discussion of the scientific topics and formulation of main objectives and motivations of study of the cosmic electromagnetic spectrum in the Southern sky in the energy range below 100 GeV, being presently quite poorly explored. While the small detection area of the Fermi LAT does not allow adequate photon statistics, imaging air Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays allow to operate effectively in the energy range above 100 GeV. Recently, the H.E.S.S. telescope array was equipped with a fifth, 28-m diameter telescope, extending its accessible energy range well below 100 GeV.

The relatively large gamma-ray fluxes below 100 GeV, together with the huge detection areas offered by the IACT technique, can provide the highest gamma-ray photon statistics compared to any other energy band of cosmic gamma-radiation. This should allow detailed spectroscopic and temporal studies of a broad variety of astrophysical phenomena related to pulsars, compact binary systems, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, as well as cosmological issues related to the indirect search for dark matter, diffuse extragalactic UV background, and intergalactic magnetic fields.

We will discuss science now possible in the ground-base below-100 GeV domain in the Southern hemisphere. The workshop consists of plenary reviews during the first day, parallel tracks discussing expectations and possibilities in galactic, extragalactic, and astroparticle physics, respectively, on day two, and a plenary round-up on the final day of the meeting. Invited speakers include Diego Torres (IEEC Barcelona), Greg Madejski (SLAC) and Piero Ullio (SISSA Trieste).

You may express your interest in participating at the workshop by registering at this webpage. We encourage you to do so early. As there is just a limited number of participants (60), participation is by invitation only. We will have to close the registration once the maximum number of participants is reached.
