Description
Photon science was for a long time dominated by two quite disjunctive communities. Those working with table top lasers in the visible and infrared wavelength regions, and those working at shorter wavelengths at synchrotron radiation sources. The free electron lasers have changed this landscape quite dramatically. In this talk I will describe the development of free electron lasers and present some results we have obtained at the Linac Coherent Light Source, the first X-ray free electron laser, located at SLAC National Accelarator Laboratory at Stanford University.
