Recent breakthroughs in quantum communications and laser physics have opened the possibilities to make use of underutilised degrees of freedom in the EM field for extracting more information from - and packing more information into - electromagnetic beams. This is true also at the quantum (single-photon) level, as shown by interferometric experiments made by the group led by Miles Padgett in Glasgow, and by entanglement experiments made by the group led by Anton Zeilinger in Vienna.
