Description
The Skyrme model is a field theory that admits topological soliton solutions, called Skyrmions, that are candidates for a solitonic description of nuclei. This will be a very informal talk, with audience participation greatly encouraged (don't worry we wont be playing any improv games) and the direction is not entirely known ahead of time. I will probably discuss the classical solutions to the model and the surprising symmetries that occur, allowing approximations to be made using the rational map ansatz. I will then briefly discuss some of the ideas around how to think about quantizing these solutions, along with developments from a recent conference in the UK on vibrational quantization.
