Description
The chemical reactions involving electrical charge transfer play a crucial role in the modern society. Processes like the aluminum and chlorine production, the protection against corrosion and the development of sensors for in situ clinical analysis, among others, are almost entirely based in electrochemical reactions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction are the most promising alternatives to harvest solar energy aiming to trigger the development of a sustainable society. The electrochemical techniques allow one to obtain thermodynamic and kinetic information of any redox process in order to improve the performance of existing electrode materials (electrocatalysts) or develop new ones. In this seminar I will revisit the fundaments of electrochemistry and electrocatalysis, and will discuss the most conventionally used electrochemical techniques, with emphasis in obtaining catalytic information.
