Complex interplay of spectral components in timing data

Description
Origin of broadband variability in accreting X-ray binaries has been a subject of study for several decades. Nowadays, the most successful scenario involves excitation of fluctuations in accretion disc that propagate towards the compact object. Most of studies, however, rely on the assumption of a linear response of the observed flux to these fluctuations, which fails, e.g., if the spectral shape is changing. I will describe timing properties of accreting black hole X-ray binaries taking into account peculiarities of spectral formation, and will discuss possible broader applications of this model.
