Description
As it is well known, the Lagrangian picture of any theory is not
the best suited for a faithful counting of degrees of freedom. On the other
hand, implementing purely Hamiltonian approaches to singular theories can
be quite involved and not so practical, in particular when non-linearities
are present. In this talk, we present a hybrid Lagrangian-Hamiltonian
constraint algebra characterization of vector theories which are first
order and Abelian. Such theories are generically referred to as generalized
Proca theories or vector Galileons. Our machinery provides an unequivocal
degree of freedom counting and it unveils the necessary and sufficient
conditions to avoid ghosts.
