It is generally argued that magnetic fields of white dwarfs are
remnants of the field of the star that gave rise to the white dwarf. I critically examine this argument and show that it is flawed. Next, I suggest an essentially quantum mechanism of magnetic fields of white dwarfs that is consistent with Chandrasekhar-Landau-Stoner theory of white dwarfs. Finally I show how this proposal is also incomplete such that the magnetic fields of white dwarfs remains a conundrum.
