There is a need for models of tumor growth that not only captures the spatial distribution of cells, but also their phylogenetic relationships in order to answer questions about evolution in cancer, and to keep up with data from the new field of spatial transcriptomics.
In this talk I explore a simple toy model of an infinite, diffusing and exponentially growing tissue, that keeps track of individual cells.
An expansion around small cell size compared to the scale set by diffusion and proliferation allows us to formulate this as a dynamical point process and obtain uncoupled PDEs for the evolution of its intensity functions. It turns out that terms considered small in this expansion, grow in time and eventually the expansion breaks down.
This forces us to consider fluctuations throughout the tissue from random cell division and death events. We formulate a partition function generating correlation functions of cell displacements at different positions, and discuss whether we can find universality in a growing tissue in the limit of small cells.
