DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Harry William Parke (Stockholm University)\n\nAbstra
ctTrapped ion systems are at the forefront of the development of various f
orms of quantum technology. Continuing toimprove and establish new devices
and techniques for the control of trapped ions is a vital element of ongo
ing research. Inthis thesis\, a range of experiments which aim to expand t
he quantum toolkit of trapped ion systems are presented. Theseresults prim
arily focus on the control and detection of bound motional states of a sin
gle trapped 88Sr+ ion for the purposesof quantum simulation and computatio
 n. We demonstrate how the interference between motional modes can reveal a
ninteresting new interpretation of the mechanism behind light-matter inter
action and introduce two separate techniquesfor the detection of motional
states\, based on the Autler-Townes effect and the use of composite pulses
respectively.Additionally\, we introduce a novel method to perform microm
otion compensation and build upon previous works studyingthe effects of tr
apping electric fields on a single trapped Rydberg ion\, observing the sec
ond-order quadrupolar responseof the ion with a highly precise sensitivity
