Description
Effective field theory approach to non-equilibrium dynamics is an
old concept. I explain how a relation between strongly coupled gauge
theories and gravity arises in String Theory and allows to construct
this non-equilibrium effective field theory from first principles. I
discuss the computation of the shear and bulk viscosities in a large
class of strongly interacting plasmas and comment on the ongoing
experimental efforts to measure this quantity at the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider.
