Description
The official start of FAIR, Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, will take place on October 4th in Darmstadt, Germany, when officials from Sweden and other participating countries will sign the legal documents.

FAIR will be a large accelerator facility for research in, mainly, nuclear, atomic and plasma physics, using beams of antiprotons and radioactive (as well as stable) nuclei with unprecedented intensity and precision.

With a price tag of approximately 1 GEuro, FAIR is one of the major efforts in building research infrastructure in Europe. The Swedish contribution to this investment is approximately 10 MEuro. Research groups at AlbaNova (KTH and SU) and at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory are involved in the development of accelerators and experiments for FAIR.

Professor Boris Sharkov is scientific director of FAIR. He will in his talk inform us on the planned research and status of FAIR.
