Description
I will discuss methods for adding self shielding and molecular hydrogen to cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. These processes are added in the post processing of the simulation results without introducing any new free parameters. The self shielding technique is a reverse ray tracing method and the molecular hydrogen prescription is based on observations from Blitz and Rosolowsky (2006). I will show that, with these corrections to the simulation output, the model HI column density distribution function matches observations over ten decades in log N(HI) and thus explains all known types of Ly-a absorbers in the Universe.
