Description
From 1st January this year the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory (MSL) is a part of the Physics Department at Stockholm University. MSL has a long tradition of constructing and building equipment for accelerator based physics. Already from the start as the Nobel Institute of Physics in 1937 the first director Manne Siegbahn, 1924 Nobel laureate in physics, started building accelerators. An 80 cm cyclotron, the second to be built in Europe, was put into operation already in 1939. A 225 cm cyclotron was finished in the '50s and during the second half of the '80s, the synchrotron/storage ring CRYRING was built. At present MSL is deeply involved in the construction of the cryogenic, double electrostatic storage ring DESIREE and is also engaged in projects for the XFEL at DESY in Hamburg. This seminar will give a brief overview of the history behind the present MSL, followed by a description of the present activities and the knowledge and skills of the personnel at MSL of today. After the seminar, I look forward to a discussion of how the other research groups could benefit from the combined resources of MSL which is now a part of the Physics Department.
