Description
A few years ago a remarkable galaxy population was uncovered at z ~ 2. These galaxies (SEEDs) are as massive as local giant ellipticals but have the sizes of dwarf galaxies and have apparently ceased forming new stars. They are therefore extremely dense, and seem to have very few low redshift analogs. I will briefly review the discovery of SEEDs and their initial study, give a general overview of our current knowledge and discuss two (of many) on-going projects addressing SEEDs that we are running here at the Dark Cosmology Centre.
