Description
There is significant interest for the development of high average power table-top soft x-ray sources for applications. To realize sources of this kind, laser driven plasmas (LDPs) are the dominant method employed to realize bright emission and often require high energy laser pulses depending on the generation scheme implemented. Specifics related with the design, construction and implementation of both incoherent and coherent LDP generation schemes for this short wave-length/high photon energy radiation will be discussed. To increase the average power of such sources, high energy high repetition rate laser systems were developed/implemented. Details concerning the laser systems implemented as well as results will be presented with a focus on personal contributions to the projects. This includes the demonstration of a chirped pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:Sapphire laser system which can generate a sequence of pulses to create and heat soft x-ray laser plasmas. This CPA pump laser used is a high energy terawatt system capable of generating > 14 J ps-fs pulses. Amplification stages in the system are pumped by a high energy frequency-doubled Nd-glass slab laser developed in house, designed to operate at a repetition-rate of several Hz. Also discussed, a picosecond 300 W diode pumped Nd:YAG slab system running at a repetition-rate of 2 kHz has been used to drive a bright liquid-nitrogen water-window source for imaging of biological samples.
