Description
The electron microscope is an indispensable tool in almost all physical sciences. Its importance to the understanding of the inner functioning of matter and ourselves is hard to overestimate. A state of the art transmission electron microscope (TEM) enables the study of static matter with details at the atomic level. However, until recently it has not been possible to follow, at the same atomic level, how changes in state of matter occur. In this talk I will describe developments using lasers that enable a femtosecond time resolved TEM, or ultrafast electron microscopy, and how such a microscope will be built at KTH through a recent Knut and Alice Wallenberg grant.
