Turbulent transport at rough surfaces with geophysical applications

Description
Recent observations have shown that there has been a decrease in both the areal extent and the average thickness of the Arctic sea ice. The decrease in sea ice thickness reported in the central Arctic is around 44%. Though some theoretical studies have shown that the sea ice thickness is very sensitive to the oceanic heat flux, its role in this loss is still poorly understood. To address this question, we use the Lattice Boltzmann method to numerically simulate flows over smooth and rough geometries to understand the effects of roughness. Different validation cases will be presented along with some preliminary results on two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection in the presence of a rough wall.
