Description
The majority of stars are found in binary systems, and a large fraction (up to 50%) are close enough to interact, exchanging mass and angular momentum. One of the most important modes of binary interaction, particularly in detached systems in which neither star fills its Roche lobe, is wind mass transfer. In this talk, we present Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) models of symbiotic binaries, systems that consist of a cool, mass-losing giant and an accreting compact companion, either a white dwarf or neutron star. We investigate the morphology of the outflow and the mass accretion rates for a wide range of binary parameters and discuss the implications for novae, type Ia supernovae and X-ray binaries.
