Keeping an eye on star and planet evolution: Mineralogy over parsec distances with the Herschel Space Observatory

Description
Infrared Space Telescopes allow us to probe the properties of minerals at astronomical distances with great precision. Those minerals make a presence during many phases of star and planet formation and the properties of these minerals are intimately tied to the physical and chemical processes at work. We use astromineralogy to try and answer questions like: how unique is our Solar System and the planet we live on and how do planets form from sub-micron sized solid-state particles? Astromineralogy can help us understand what kind of planetesimals and planets are present around other stars, probe their properties and possibly start to understand their history.
