The upgrade plans for the ATLAS detector are advancing. One might think that this is somewhat premature since the LHC operation will at best start in October this year. The upgrade plans are, however, driven by the luminosity development of the accelerator, which will give us 3 times the nominal luminosity (1034) in 2013 and 10 times in 2017. This means that large parts of the electronics must be replaced in due course. Given the long development times in projects like this, it is necessary to solidify ideas and freeze decisions soon.
I plan to discuss driving forces behind the upgrade and some of the ideas brought forward.
