In 1949 Donald Hebb proposed the theory of cell assemblies, still one of the most influential theories of brain function. The relevance of this theory, mathematically formulated in terms of attractor neural networks, for understanding the dynamic operation of the brain will be discussed in the context of results from large-scale cortex simulations. It will further be discussed how more abstract computational models, emerging from an increased understanding of the brain, may serve as a basis for brain-inspired approaches to intelligent learning systems
