Instrument development for IR Astronomy

Description

Even though infrared (IR) radiation often is referred to as 'heat radiation', the IR part of the spectrum really concerns the 'cold universe'. Actually it also reveals 'hidden' parts of the universe, such as star formation hidden by dusty clouds. Observations in the IR from the ground is limited to a number of spectral 'windows' (the same windows that limits the greenhouse effect) and in addition, the telescope is shining at the same wavelength as one likes to observe. The best solution is then to go to space, preferably with a cooled telescope. Such projects are of course expensive and requires international collaborations. We (Hans-Gustav Florén and myself) will show examples on our technical activities in both smaller in-house experiments and as partners in international projects.
