A core facility for mass spectrometry in the Department of Biotechnology, KTH, houses a state-of-the-art orthogonal acceleration quadrupole/time-of-flight instrument for biomolecule analysis. The gentle ionisation conditions afforded by the electrospray ionisation (ESI) source allows the analysis of peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates with high sensitivity. In addition, the ESI source can be interfaced with a nanoflow liquid chromatography system for the rapid detection and identification of biomolecules chromatographic effluents. An overview of the capabilities of the system will be presented, highlighted by several case studies currently being carried out in the Wood Biotechnology Laboratory at AlbaNova.
