Accelerator technology for free-electron lasers

Free-electron lasers for x-ray wavelength are being developed at several laboratories around the world, and the Swedish Research Council has signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of the TESLA XFEL at DESY, Hamburg, which will produce coherent radiation at 1 Å with extremely high brilliance. This talk will give an introduction to synchrotron radiation and free-electron lasers, it will describe the technology and accelerator-physics issues of free-electron lasers, and it will give an overview of the on-going development in the field.
