Description
Ultracompact, double degenerate, binaries (UCB) represent the extreme endpoints of compact binary evolution. These hydrogen deficient systems have orbital periods in range from app. 60 minutes down to few minutes. A handfull of systems have orbital periods around or below 10 minutes. Even if most longer period UCB's, i.e. AM CVn systems, show clear evidence for accretion discs, the shortest period systems don't. In this talk I discuss observational evidence for magnetic accretion and/or unipolar inductor i.e. "electric star" models based on X-ray light curve inversion modelling.
