Description
The one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model can succesfully describe the microscopic roots of friction as the excitation of phonons and its relation to structural (in)commensurability. We investigate how the model can be extended to two dimensions in order to include qualitatively new effects which might be important in realistic systems. A successful extension, dubbed the cross model, is identified and applied to several new system setups. We find that qualitative differences, due to the two-dimensional nature of the model, can affect the obtained friction both quantitatively and qualitatively, with results that could possibly be more easily observed in experiments than what the one-dimensional model indicates. The proposed model could further be applied to describe other physical situations, by variation of the parameters or further extension.
