Description
An anticoincidence detector for the suppression of cosmic ray background in a high-purity germanium detector has been designed, built and tested for the low-background laboratory at AlbaNova University Centre in Stockholm. A plastic scintillator plate has been placed above the germanium detector and the muon induced background has been lowered by 52 ± 2% while marginally increasing the dead time of the germanium detector. The possibility to further increase background suppression to 80% by placing additional scintillator plates on the sides of the germanium detector is discussed.
