Description
In this talk I will present the theoretical methods we use to perform quantum ab initio studies of mutual neutralization reactions in collisions of oppositely charged atomic ions at low energies. The process is driven by non-adiabatic couplings between highly excited states occurring at large internuclear distances. The challenges and limitations of the computations are discussed and results from quantum studies are compared with semi-classical Landau-Zener calculations and measurements. The extension of the theoretical scheme to studies of collisions of atomic and molecular ions is briefly discussed.
