Most of the surface of the Sun – more than 90% – is quiet most of the time. In particular, when there is not a single active region, all the surface is quiet Sun and still, for example, the corona maintains its million degrees. The solar poles are quiet regions with the peculiarity that their intense fields (polar faculae) have been associated to the open field lines of the global field that follows the 22-year activity cycle. In this talk I will review some of the works trying to solve many interesting questions concerning the nature quiet Sun fields and their link to the global magnetism and the activity cycle. I will focus my attention on the latest results on polar global fields.
