Description
Ionization of molecules may proceed via different mechanisms. Some are thermal in nature, notably the thermionic emission observed for refractory metals and fullerenes. Another is the quasi-equilibrium hot electron emission observed after deep sub threshold photon absorption in femtosecond laser pulses. Recent experiments have demonstrated that this mechanism is also active after absorption of a single photon and competes favorably with direct ionization. Results from the experiments will be presented and the theoretical background discussed.
