Description
Spicules are highly dynamic jets that are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere. They have been suggested as a source of hot plasma to the corona potentially helping explain its puzzling temperatures of several million degrees. In this talk I will discuss how the observational characterisation of spicules has advanced over the past decade, from the ground with the SST, and from space with the Hinode and IRIS satellites. I will also discuss results from recent MHD models of the solar atmosphere that produce jets with similar properties as observed spicules. These models shed new light on the generation of spicules and their role in energising the outer solar atmosphere.
