Description
The Standard Model of particle physics must be expanded to accommodate neutrino masses. It also cannot explain the dominance of matter over anti-matter in the universe. Both aspects are very naturally connected if neutrinos are their own anti-particles (Majorana particles). The talk will highlight the essence of the theoretical arguments and it will describe the experimental effort to detect the related lepton number violating process by searching for neutrinoless double beta decay.
