Quantum optics with nanowires: generating, manipulating and detecting light at the single photon level

Description
Nanowires offer new opportunities for nanoscale quantum optics; the quantum dot geometry in semiconducting nanowires as well as the material composition and environment can be engineered with unprecedented freedom to engineer high-performance single photon sources. In addition because of the very small fine structure splitting, entangled pairs of photons can be generated from a nanowire and will discuss the limiting factors in entanglement measurements. Another type of nanowire under study in our group is superconducting nanowires for single photon detection, reaching efficiencies, time resolution and dark counts far beyond currently available detectors. We will present our first attempts at realizing integrated quantum circuits.
