From attracting stones to internet's repository: the mysteries of magnetism

Magnetism was one of the very first natural phenomena to be observed, and one of the very last to be explained. While almost everyone has familiarity with basic magnetic phenomena, not many are aware of how important and pervasive magnetism is in our modern society. In this public lecture, I will give an overview of magnetism's history and perspectives: from its discovery, through the key experiments and the ideas that lead to its understanding, to its application in modern technology and the open challenges that research is addressing.
