Restriction of extension in one or more dimensions can cause strong effects with respect to ordering. Changes in the critical temperature as well as order parameters are often observed, ultimately reflecting the presence of a dimensional crossover. These effects will be discussed in connection to every day effects caused by the presence of boundaries and we will dwell upon its implications for nano-sciences.
