Description
Dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom are relatively well understood if they exhibit particular symmetries and conservation laws, or if they are sufficiently far from any such special situation. However, many cases of interest lie somewhere in between and are therefore quite resistant to a satisfying theoretical description.
In this talk, an analytic theory is presented for the temporal relaxation of such isolated many-body quantum systems which are moderately perturbed from a known reference case. Given this reference dynamics, we employ a typicality approach modeling the essential characteristics of the perturbation operator to describe the time evolution of expectation values in the perturbed system.
The theory offers a unified framework for such diverse phenomena as prethermalization, quantum quenches, or the relaxation of system-bath compounds.
We support it by comparison with both experimental and numerical data from the literature.
