Description
I will present results from the HST/ACS high redshift supernova (SN) search in the two GOODS fields during HST Cycles 11-13. In total, about 120 SNe were found and we use this sample to derive the Type Ia SN rate to z~1.6 and the core collapse SN rate to z~1.1. Compared to our previously published results, based on Cycle 11 observations only, we have now increased the coverage of the search by a factor 2.7, making the total area searched equivalent to one square degree. The rates we derive are consistent with our original results. In particular, the few detected Ia SNe at z > 1.4 supports our previous result that there is a drop in the Type Ia SN rate at high redshift. In contrast, a number of recent results based on e.g., low redshift SN samples and SN host galaxy properties suggest that a major fraction of the Type Ia SN rate should follow the star formation rate, while a smaller fraction of the rate is proportional to the old stellar population. While our results are consistent with this picture at low redshifts, the drop we find at z > 1.4 appears to contradict a SN rate that closely follows the star formation rate. I will discuss possible ways to reconcile the discrepancies. (Host: Jens Melinder)
