Abstract :

A central operation in any information processing device is a copy operation, in which memory bit is correlated with a data bit. We combine the  stochastic thermodynamics of copying and finite-time bit control to analyze a finite-time copying protocol. We are especially interested in how the optimal initial state of the memory depends on both the speed of the copy process, and on the bias in the data bit. We discuss both the case that we copy both states of the data with equal accuracy, as well as under the constraint of equal mutual information between data and memory. In the latter case, we show that a symmetry-breaking effect occurs in the regime of high copy speeds when copying unbiased data bits.
