DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Oksana Iarygina (Stockholm University\, Nordita)\, F
lorian Niedermann (Stockholm University\, Nordita)\n\nVenue\nAlbano campus
 \, Nordita\, Stockholm\, Sweden\nHouse 3\, Floor 6\, Mega 6228  See the
campus and Google maps via the links.\n\nTarget Audience\nThis course is d
esigned for PhD students and young postdocs in theoretical physics\, parti
cularly those interested in the intersection of quantum mechanics\, genera
l relativity\, and cosmology. We invite students at SU and KTH to attend th
e course in person. Students from other universities within the Nordic cou
ntries (broadly defined) are welcome to join remotely via Zoom. The course
is also suitable for advanced master students (please inquire regarding th
e possibility of a certificate) and researchers looking to deepen their kn
owledge of quantum field theory in curved backgrounds.\nThe target audienc
e at the on-site class on 5 May 2025.\n\nPrerequisites\nGeneral Relativity
\, basic QFT and Cosmology.\n\nScope\nThis advanced course delves into the
subject of quantum field theory (QFT) in the presence of curved backgroun
ds. Students will learn\n\nhow to consistently formulate a quantum field t
heory in a curved spacetime backgrounds\,\nstudy particle creation in expa
nding universes (with inflation as the main application)\,\nthe behavior o
f quantum fields in the presence of horizons and the phenomenon of Hawkin
g radiation.\n\nThis course is essential for understanding the interplay b
etween quantum mechanics and general relativity\, two of the fundamental p
illars of modern theoretical physics\, with applications to active researc
h topics in cosmology and particle physics. \n\nKey topics\n\nIntroductio
n and Recap: A brief review of QFT in Minkowski space and essential conce
pts of General Relativity and Cosmology.\nQuantum Fields in Expanding Univ
erse: The formulation of QFT in curved spacetimes is introduced. This incl
udes the mode decomposition in curved backgrounds and Bogoliubov transform
ations.\nParticle Creation and Unruh Effect.\nQuantum Fields during Inflat
ion: Study of primordial fluctuations with connection to the Cosmic Microw
ave background (CMB) observations. \nHawking Radiation and Black Holes: S
tudy of Hawking radiation\, the process by which black holes emit particle
s and evaporate\, and its implications for black hole thermodynamics.\n\n\
nFormat\nThe course will start in April 2025 (preliminary start date 7th o
f April). As a registered particpant you should have received a link to jo
in the Slack workspace of the lecture. \nThe in-person participants are s
upposed to come to Nordita. The remote participants can join the meetings
via Zoom. The course will run for six weeks and consist of two weekly lectu
res (90 minutes each). It will be mainly based on the following book: \nM
 ukhanov\, V.\, & Winitzki\, S. (2007)\, Introduction to Quantum Effects in
Gravity\, Cambridge University Press (link).\nProblems will be provided t
o the students.  The solutions can be discussed with the lecturers on Sla
ck.\nThe lectures are aimed at PhD students\, but Master students and more
experienced researchers are welcome to join\, too.\n\nZoom/Slack coordina
tes \nPlease reach out to the organizers to get access to the zoom and Sl
ack workspace. \n\nLecture schedule\nThis is the preliminary schedule of
 the lecture.\n \n\n\n\n \nApplication\nDue to limited capacity\, partici
pation in the lecture requires approval by the lecturers. \nThe registrat
ion is closed now. Please contact the organizers about the possibility of
participating in the course.\n\nLecturers \nOksana Iarygina (Nordita Post
 doc\, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow)\nFlorian Niedermann (Nordita Assista
nt Professor)Guest lecturer on BHs and Hawking radiation: Watse Sybesma (N
