Molluscan shells exhibit a diverse range of pigmentation patterns. In the current work it is shown how a concept of dynamic excitability may underlie several classes of pigmentation patterns. In a dynamic excitable model an underlying excitable system switches between different unsteady states.
A fast switching between two states is seen to be responsible for the emergence of some of the more complex pigmentation patterns observed in molluscan shells.
