Description

I will present a summary of some of our recent observational campaigns
to investigate the conditions in some of the first galaxies, as well as
their impact upon the ionization state of the intergalactic medium.
Specifically, I plan to address:
1. the numbers of luminous galaxies at redshifts above 8, and how
flashes in the pan are just that;
2. the chemical abundance patterns of the first galaxies, and how
abnormal is the new normal;
3. the surprising numbers of AGN at early times, and how making black
holes is difficult; and
4. updates on the reionization history using Lyman alpha damping wings
and Lyman alpha emitting galaxies.
