The oldest stars alive today carry small traces of some of the very first stars and supernova explosions in the Universe. By analysing the spectra of metal-poor, second-generation stars, we can probe the earliest phases of star formation. However, these stars are rare and difficult to identify. I will discuss what we have learned so far about the properties of the first stars from these abundance patterns, and where my group is heading next as we dig deeper into the distant past.
